Poetry

Since I posted a white thing poem, now I have to post a black thing poem.  I like this one, and the message it is portraying.  Here goes.

The Chimney Sweeper: A little black thing among the snow

By William Blake
A little black thing among the snow,
Crying "weep! 'weep!" in notes of woe!
"Where are thy father and mother? say?"
"They are both gone up to the church to pray.

Because I was happy upon the heath,
And smil'd among the winter's snow,
They clothed me in the clothes of death,
And taught me to sing the notes of woe.

And because I am happy and dance and sing,
They think they have done me no injury,
And are gone to praise God and his Priest and King,
Who make up a heaven of our misery."

I came across this poem while looking at slam poetry and other poetry on the web, and I thought it would be perfect for this blog.  It kind of holds a lot of truth for me right now.  I won't go into it.

Also while reading it I came to the conclusion, (I think), that the 6th stanza is talking about Emily Dickinson.

Enjoy.

The White Room

by Charles Simic

The obvious is difficult
To prove. Many prefer
The hidden. I did, too.
I listened to the trees.

They had a secret
Which they were about to
Make known to me--
And then didn't.

Summer came. Each tree
On my street had its own
Scheherazade. My nights
Were a part of their wild

Storytelling. We were
Entering dark houses,
Always more dark houses,
Hushed and abandoned.

There was someone with eyes closed
On the upper floors.
The fear of it, and the wonder,
Kept me sleepless.

The truth is bald and cold,
Said the woman
Who always wore white.
She didn't leave her room.

The sun pointed to one or two
Things that had survived
The long night intact.
The simplest things,

Difficult in their obviousness.
They made no noise.
It was the kind of day
People described as "perfect."

Gods disguising themselves
As black hairpins, a hand-mirror,
A comb with a tooth missing?
No! That wasn't it.

Just things as they are,
Unblinking, lying mute
In that bright light--
And the trees waiting for the night.

It's the new year! Time to turn over a new leaf and start making goals that you make every year, which only make you feel worse when you don't complete them!! Yay!! So anyways, what are you're goals for the new year?

One of mine is to learn how to read music...:)
